Did you know that there was a large castle in Sint Maartensdijk in the 14th century? It was Frank van Borselen who had it built. He later married the Dutch countess and power woman Jacoba van Beieren. The castle had a real knights’ hall but also an outer bailey with a bakery, brewery and, of course, a main gate. There was even a stud farm in the outer grounds where horses were also bred. Heiress Anna van Egmond married William of Orange in 1549, and with that the possessions came into the hands of the Oranges. To this day, King Willem-Alexander is Lord of Sint-Maartensdijk.

In the shop Wegwijs Lokaal, owned by Roland van Tilborg, the Orange Room has very appropriately been open since King’s Day 2023. Volunteers Joost and Olga Molegraaf have diligently created a beautiful collection. There is even an original money chest on display in the Orange Room. This one is special because of its intricate locking mechanism. The Oranjekamer is not only a tribute to the Oranges but also shows images of Sint Maartensdijk in times of the flood, for example.

The Wegwijs Lokaal shop is a treat for anyone who loves Zeeland. You will find plenty of products that are fun to use yourself but perhaps even more fun to give as gifts. What a good combination and definitely recommended for a stopover!
